TURF TALK FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Members,
September is almost here and with it will bring cooler temperatures and give the grasses stressed by long periods of hot weather a chance to regain its green color throughout. As I write this newsletter to you, we have had almost eight inches of rain since yesterday afternoon, with more to come in the next several days, the course is saturated and will bring good things to the grass, such as nitrogen and other beneficial elements.
Most, if not all the August goals have been achieved, to include the arrival of new tee markers, bunker rakes (please leave the rakes in the bunkers), sand added to numerous bunkers (left bunker on nine, practice tee bunker, fifteen, numerous trees removed, all to make the golf course more enjoyable to play. Click here for videos and various ways to help maintain the course. I would like to extend a special thanks to the two members who donated the new rakes.
The golf course has come in nicely from the tee through the greens. The greens are in great shape and healthy. We have had a few areas on greens that have been stressed due to a variety of reasons but suffice it to say they are rebounding terrifically with this onset of cooler temperatures and will continue to do so as we gain fall momentum. September is the time of year that we focus on spraying out the Sedges, Virginia button weed, Goosegrass and Green Kyllinga as well as Dallisgrass plants that pop up during the extreme heat of summer. Our overriding objectives will be to kill the weeds and grow the grass that we want, healthier, thicker more vibrant grass will help to minimize unwanted weeds from populating.
As always, please keep in mind traffic/parking patterns while playing golf that will relief compaction, please repair divots in the fairways but also the rough, repair ball marks. I have provided some links at the bottom of this newsletter to aid us in making Coharie as good as it can be while enjoying the golf course.
Thank you for your continued support!
