TURF TALK FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Coharie CC Members,

Be careful what you wish for! When we had several weeks of heat and drought, we asked for rain, after twenty-one inches of rain in seven days, we wanted sunshine and no rain. The golf course is wet and there is a small wash out on hole number two in the center of the fairway, once we see less rain, I will refill and remove the orange flags that mark its location.

If the course has received a large amount of rain, please drive on the high side of the hole when there aren’t cart paths to ride on, preferably the rough until your previous experience allows you to move into the fairway. This will keep the course free from ruts.

The rain not only brings water down, but it also brings nitrogen (fertilizer) as well as other trace elements that accelerate grass growth. This is a great thing but when it rains too much, we cannot get out to mow or we will damage the course too. The Member-Guest is coming up right after you receive this newsletter, and our crew will be working to catch up on mowing the golf course out to present and play its best.

August will be much of the same as July, a continuation of repairing bare on the course, spraying weeds out, primarily in the rough and along ditch lines and ponds.

Until then……

Thank you for your continued support!
