TURF TALK FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Members,
As the colder weather sets in on Coharie, the maintenance programs will shift into winter projects of clearing areas that have grown up, trees that are dead and or have fallen. Although the roughs and fairways have been mowed for the last time until spring, we will continue to work on ditch and pond banks, trimming bushes around the pool perimeter, front entrance and other small areas around the course that need it in December. As those projects clear up, we will shift into trimming teeing area and fairway sprinkler heads, granite in ground markers etc.
As of last week, we have had some POA Trivialis germinate on #11 green and a few small plants of carpetgrass on #2 as well as a few lingering goosegrass plants on the practice putting green and #2 green. Due to the temperature at application, I am trying to time the minimal post herbicide application to eradicate these plants, however, we need a 60-degree day with sun to be effective, it will come, and I will be choosy, so I don’t waste chemical or diminish the results.
In January’s newsletter, I will share with y’all what the projects and agronomic plan for 2024 will look like as some will be capital expenditure related equipment purchases, if possible, to continue making Coharie the best it can be.
As I mentioned in November’s newsletter, I am very pleased with the agronomic plan results of the past year, and I am looking forward to 2024 and all the challenges and victories it will bring.
Until then…..
Fairways and greens,
Mike
