TURF TALK FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Members,
There isn’t much to report for October, our staff will be working on the same mowing practices as the grass will be growing for another 4-6 weeks before the course goes dormant. We fertilized the course on the 26 th with a half-pound of nitrogen and an ample supply of potassium plus minors to help protect against a cold winter and yet store carbohydrates for the winter to allow the grass an early green up in the spring.
Things to look forward to through November are pre-emerge applications of fairways, green surrounds, rough etc. to prevent winter/spring weeds from germination. This process will be repeated with different chemicals in the shoulder of the season in February to prevent summer weeds from germination.
First week in October, I will be treating the greens with a pre-emergent to prevent Poa Annua from germination however, with the way Poa grows and germinates, may not get it all and it will require a post emergent to fully control.
We will continue to focus on making Coharie the best it can be through these shoulder months and present the best course we can for you, the members.
P.S. Please place bunker rakes teeth down on the low inside of the bunker when you are finished raking said bunkers.
Until November….Fairways and greens
Mike,
