FAREWELL GREG CHITTESTER
Dear friends and members,
As many, if not all, are aware, we lost our superintendent to a very fast onset illness on January 9 th of this year. Greg Chittester came into my life in April of 2019 as an Irrigation Technician at King’s Grant Golf and Country Club located in Fayetteville NC. He eventually earned the Superintendent position and held that position until he came here to this beautiful Ellis Maples designed course at the end of July 2022. Greg had a long history in the golf business on the agronomic side. His accomplishments were many, however, he cherished building out the golf course at Barton Creek Golf Club in Austin Texas and when the course opened, he stayed on and worked in the maintenance department and learned the irrigation processes that is the life blood of any golf course, which became his specialty throughout the years. Greg also broadened his knowledge base and eventually became the assistant superintendent at a couple of local courses in the Austin area then onto Superintendent positions along his storied path of over 30 + years in the business. When Greg learned of an opportunity to lead the agronomic team at Coharie CC, he thought he had been blessed, he loved this course the day he toured it, and jumped right in to do all he could to make it better and then the best.
Greg was not just an employee to me but a person who would do anything for you, a person who spoke softly and carried a big stick, he was not a flashy person and he never wanted to be in the spotlight, he wanted his work, passion, and love for Coharie CC to show in his work product, not in his words. I always admired and respected Greg for his love for his craft and more importantly, who he was as a person. Greg and I are both Texans, me because I am from Texas and him because he spent so many years there working, playing golf and fishing, which brought him and Patch, his faithful dog peace.
Rest assured that Coharie CC was in the best of hands with Greg at the helm and we will do all we can to live up to his standards along our path, here at Coharie. I know Greg knew of the overwhelming support and love that came from his new Coharie family, it brought tears to his eyes, and he felt that love in his last days.
Rest in Peace Greg!
