NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Members,
An early spring is imminent as you can tell from the starting of green up of the putting surfaces, fairways and roughs. We will continue to work on winter projects until the golf course fully greens up to a point where our large equipment begins to dominate the landscape again. The pre-emergent applied for summer weeds has been completed and in just the nick of time due to the warmer weather setting in. I am very pleased the course is as weed free as it is going into spring, which will help us next season at this time.
Some of the items that we will continue to work on are tee marker repainting, cart path edging, in ground granite distance yardage marker edging. As the winter projects start winding down and the summer growing season begins, fertilization of the course from tees through greens will become more frequent. One of our major goals this summer will be to grow the short grass playing surfaces to their fullest potential so there is ample grass from which to play from in fairways, green surrounds and ensure the rough isn't too penal.
As most are aware, there have been several key trees removed on the course (#3, #7) which have historically, blocked sunlight (which prevents grass from growing underneath), and or been a major safety hazard and tree limbs cut back to open holes up to allow for multiple shot making options while playing the holes. The dilapidated asphalt cart path on hole #2 is scheduled to be replaced as early as this week.
There will be more to come in April's newsletter to keep y'all informed of the fertilization program and what to expect from it.
Until then,
Fairways and Greens,
Mike Monk, PGA, GCSAA
