Invitation from Mr. Williams
Dear Golfing Friends:
When I say golf has been good to me that is an understatement! For over 90 years, I have had the good fortune of being a part of the golfing community in Clinton, NC.
The members of Coharie Country Club asked me if they could use my name to restart the Coharie Invitational. I think there are many others here who deserve it more than me, but in the spirit of the game, I agreed to it. I was pleased that the first George Williams Invitational tournament in 2019 was a huge success.
This first George Williams Invitational tournament brought back the spark of camaraderie, the flutter of competition and the fullness of sportsmanship with competitors young and old. On that day, I was able to greet old golfing buddies and meet new ones.
I want to congratulate Gene and Trey Howell for winning the 2019 championship. Gene has been a fixture in tournament golf in the state for many years and his son Trey is truly an emerging star in amateur golf in the Carolinas. I congratulate Bill and Jack Nance for winning the Senior Division. These twin brothers grew up next door to me. From the time they played junior golf in CGA events and went on to play at Wake Forest, I have enjoyed watching their passion for the game. I also congratulate Jeff Heath and Bob Yow for winning the Super Senior Division, defeating Jackie Parrish and Jimmy Raynor in a sudden death playoff. Besides being accomplished tournament golfers, all four of these gentlemen are long-time golfing buddies.
I was disappointed that the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 event, but I was excited to have the tournament return in September, 2021. The Championship division was won by two Clintonians; Hayden Lanier and Reid Darden. The Senior Division was won by David Glabicki and Hunter Grove from Cary. The Super Senior division was won by Jack Hooks and John Harsbarger from Wilminton.
I really do hope you will play in this year’s event. Spots will be limited so enter early. Once again, I hope to see all of you on the first tee!
George Williams
