NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Remember the good ole days, when it rained every couple days. Well they are gone and we are running our irrigation system every night and during the day. If everyone could do a little rain dance, it would be fantastic.
We have had an extremely busy month. Tees were built and sodded, greens were repaired with new sod and a peat/sand mix, landscaping around the clubhouse, drainage work, and trimming around the perimeter of the swamp. All these tasks along with our normal schedule has been a chore to say the least, but they will only improve the golf course in the long run.
The bad areas on the putting green, #1,#2, and #4 were cut out with a sod cutter and dug down 6 inches. We then filled the spots with a peat/sand mix to help hold moisture. We then layed new sod, sanded the seams, and have kept watered since. It was hard work that required all hands on deck including Richard Kimble a few extra helpers. Thank you to Tracy Pope for the use of some his farm employees and to Richard for all his hard work.
I will be going out with several sprays this month. I will be spraying part of my herbicide program for weed control. I will also start our primo and fertilizer for fairways, tees, and approaches. These sprays will help us control the quality and health of our turf. Hopefully if we get some rainfall, I will be able to spray the irrigation pond for weeds. It has been planned for 2 months now, but delayed due to the restriction on water usage afterwards.
All in all it has been a busy month and will be a busy summer. My staff and I will continue to do all we can to improve on our great course.
Sincerely, Kevin McCamy CGCS
